The four living members of N.W.A. recently convened for their first magazine cover shoot since Ice Cube went solo after an acrimonious split 1991. The reunion was brokered by Billboard and occasioned by the release of the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, but the sit-down could be viewed as something akin to a passing of the torch: Kendrick Lamar, Compton native and the contemporary face for West Coast hip hop, conducted the interview. (“Ain’t nobody we’d rather have do this interview,” said Ice Cube.) The ensuing conversation covers N.W.A.’s cultural impact and legacy, how the rap legends view the current hip hop landscape, and what it was like to work with Eazy-E.
