New Era, the international lifestyle brand with an authentic sports heritage, is proud to announce the launch of the 1996 Collection with New York filmmaker, Spike Lee, as part of the on-going New Era Heritage Series, on July 17th 2014.

In 1996, fashion history was made with a simple phone call. Film director and passionate New York Yankees fan, Spike Lee, called New Era’s CEO, Chris Koch, with an unusual request – a scarlet red Yankees cap. Koch obtained special permission and produced a few Yankees caps in colours other than the traditional dark navy, including green, yellow and orange. However, there was no need for options as Spike knew exactly what he wanted – a red cap to match a new red jacket. Spike wore the cap to game three of the 1996 World Series in Atlanta exposing the cap to millions. The public demand for the cap was overwhelming and ushered in a whole new awareness for the New Era brand.

The collection consists of four caps in the traditional team navy colour and Lee’s requested scarlet red. All of the caps are lined with silk carrying Spike’s repeated signature, and the infamous “A Spike Lee Joint” sign-off is stitched into the inner sweatband. Each cap is presented in a limited edition red case to celebrate a re-mastered edition of the 1996 iconic Yankees cap.
